Last night was the best

Last night was the best night of live improv comedy that I’ve seen at OSU in, well, ever. Derek and the rest of the Monkeys rocked out for a full house, and hilarity ensued. Great skits, witty biting satire (even if they did take a few cheap shots, IMO), and far fewer awkward moments during the improv bits. Believe me, the last part is important if you’re a person like myself who feels painfully awkward seeing people being painfully awkward. I do have one problem with improv comedy in front of a college audience, and I will demonstrate it in a sample dialogue I like to call “College Improv: A Play in One Act with an Overwrought Obvious Moral and Little to No Character Development”.

Improv Troupe Member: Can someone in the audience give us a scene to act out?

College Student: Penis! Boobs!

While the above scene never exactly occurred, regretfully it is not an exaggeration.

It was also cool to see Brett there, even if it was just for a few minutes. The show went longer than I thought, and I had to jet right afterward to give someone a ride home, so I didn’t really get to stay around and “kick it” afterward.

I have a new theory,

I have a new theory, arrived at after many bleary-eyed hours in the (relatively) new giganto computer lab in Caldwell Hall: By forcing the intelligent über-geeks to do their coding alongside the attractive business students working in Excel in the combined computing environment, the CIS faculty hopes to encourage a little mating action that will result in breeding a master race of hyper-intelligent, super-attractive coding geeks, who _can’t even figure out how to add a column in Excel_!! I don’t know why that last part would be desirable, but it’s obviously what they’d end up with. If this seems a little improbable to you, I understand. But how else do you explain the dimmed lights and Barry White playing softly in the background?

Fun with comix: Tiny Sepuku. Advice column meets Hello Kitty stylings? This is great, I can’t believe I hadn’t seen it before now.

Back from a solid weekend

Back from a solid weekend of geekery. I spent all day Saturday coding for my graphics class, which has become a major time sink but I’m loving it. (Except when I spend the last 8 hours before a lab is due working on some mysterious bug that never gets fixed) Sunday was my very first LAN party, which involved transforming my place into a super geek lair. Between my roommates and I we had our own 4 computers, and then 6 other people brought theirs over and set them up in the living room. After power and network issues got all resolved, we had an insane Operation Flashpoint session that lasted until almost 4 am. Today I sat around and watched Space Ghost episodes instead of homework. Oh yeah, and Friday I saw The Man Who Wasn’t There, the new Coen brothers film, which was very enjoyable in that odd Coen brothers sort of way. Much closer in tone to Fargo than to the more recent O Brother, Where Art Thou. No real stand-out character performances, like John Goodman or Tim Blake Nelson’s characters in The Big Lebowski and O Brother, Where Art Thou respectively but a very good film nonetheless.

I am not a blogaholic.

I am not a blogaholic. 36100. I just use blog casually, recreationally if you will. I’ll only have a blog or two with some friends or a party. Sure, every now and then I overdo it and I wake up in an azalea bush wearing only a women’s bathrobe and mumbing incoherently, but I don’t have a problem.

The question presents itself: Is it worth it to pay Huge Rock Concert ticket prices to see a band who’s most recent output is subpar at best, even though their previous work was excellent and they’ve produced an album that you consider an enduring classic? Is it worth it if they are accompanied by the self proclaimed Greatest Band in the World, featuring the legendary Jack Black who will likely rock you into an unrecognizable pulpy mess? What if over-priced refreshments will be served? Then? This is the question I face, as I just learned today that Weezer and Tenacious D will be playing in Columbus at the Schottenstein on December 5.

Well, that was certainly a surprise. My devious little sister set me up with an actual, genuine, surprise party, the little dickens. No clue. None. I had just come back from gorging on wings at Quaker Steak with Matt and Ben, when… BAM! Nothing I could do but just stand there wearing a dumbfounded look and wing sauce. It was a great time and a brilliant plan on my sister’s part, but when I think about it, can I ever really trust any of my friends again? No, of course not. Bastards.

Monsters, Inc – big thumbs

Monsters, Inc – big thumbs up. Star Wars Episode 2 trailer – thumbs down. All I know now is that it looks pretty (no surprise there) and at least 30 seconds of the actual movie doesn’t contain Jar Jar Binks.
